Tokuda Hospital Sofia is the first international venture of the Tokushukai Medical Corporation, which incorporated in 1975 and is the world’s largest private medical service provider with over 280 medical facilities operating in Japan and one general hospital here in the capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia.  

Sofia won the hospital project despite strong competition from other cosmopolitan cities such as Moscow, Seoul, Warsaw, Belgrade, and Bucharest.

 

Dr. Torao Tokuda

Dr. Torao Tokuda was born on February 17, 1938 in Tokunoshima which is part of the Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. From a young age he dreamed of becoming a doctor. Following his dream he was accepted into the Osaka Medical University, after his graduation he worked as a doctor in the municipal hospital.

In 1973, he opened his first hospital in Matsubara located in Osaka and implemented his medical philosophy of 24 hour 7 days a week medical service. In the same year, he established the Tokushukai Group and he began to build hospitals in remote regions to provide medical access to the underserved populations of Japan

In 1985, Dr. Tokuda achieved his dream to establish a hospital with 360 beds in his home town. Following his driving principle “All living beings are created equal and have the equal rights to health and life”, Dr. Tokuda created medical facilities anywhere where people were in need of reliable and quick access to quality medical service.  At the same time of expanding his medical facility network to serve society, Dr. Tokuda decided to serve his country as a parliament member and has served four terms of office. Dr. Tokuda is the president of the “Tokushukai Medical Corporation” Japan and the prime investor in Tokuda Hospital Sofia, majority stockholder Tokuda Bank JSC.

He is also an advocate of social issues, a writer, and philosopher. His literary works include “in Life We are all Equal”, “Doctors without Corruption”,  and “Will for Life” and others.  His social activism is focused towards improving the level of medical care especially from the patients perspective including; medical ethics, doctor patient relationships, and the continuous improvement of medical service.
