Laboratory Tests

The department works in close collaboration with hospital clinical laboratory in which the high-tech equipment allows a large number of analyses’s to be performed using small volumes of blood which is particularly useful for newborns and young children.

The department offers laboratory tests including full blood analysis, blood gas analysis, blood group typing which are conducted at the request of the parents or when medically necessary for example if the newborn has difficulty adapting to life outside of the womb, or shows any symptoms of disease.  

First Vaccines

  • 12 hours after birth hepatitis B vaccination is administered, but for babies of mothers with positive Australian antigen are immunized 6 hours after birth
  • BCG vaccinations given 48 hours after birth 

We screen all our newborns 72 hours after birth for phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism.
