The neonatology in-patient ward is located on 3^rd floor of the hospital and consists of 3 sectors:

• Healthy children sector following the decentralized principle Mother and Child
• Children at risk sector
• Intensive Care Sector (NICU)  

The neonatology department provides advanced treatment for newborns, quality primary resuscitation of high-risk newborns, ventilation apparatuses, administration of surfactant for severe respiratory failure, monitoring of central nervous system development. 

The primary medical care we provide for both premature and term newborns have been designed to support the babies’ post-birth adaptation and to reduce newborn health risks. Our neonatology team’s efforts are aimed to: 

• Monitor vital signs and thermal comfort
• Assist cardiopulmonary adaptation
• Adjust alkaline-acid status
• Provide nutrition and fluids
• Provide continuous monitoring and assess any status changes

The department works closely with all of the other clinical departments of our multi-profile hospital and can provide medical assistance to meet the health needs of newborns 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The in patient ward has 20 beds, and 8 of which are located in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for intensive monitoring and therapy.

In accord with the contemporary methods for assessing the condition of the newborn, the neonatology team implements good medical practices when providing resuscitation and newborn medical care. The post birth examination and continuous observation combined with our team’s deep knowledge of potential risk factors allow us to reduce the newborn risk of developing diseases during the course of the neonatal period. 

Tokuda Hospital Sofia has modern facilities, contemporary equipment and quality supplies, which allows us to offer the latest preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic medical methods and services, for example argon laser therapy for retinopathy among premature babies.

The department is equipped with:

• Incubators for at risk newborns
• The latest generation of the respiratory apparatuses for machine ventilation
• Breathing support machines
• Transport incubator with a respirator
• Specialized lamps to conduct phototherapy
• Ultrasound machine
• The department has full access to all of the high tech equipment available in the hospital including the MRI scanner, digital X-ray equipment, Doppler ultrasound and others.
