Tokuda Hospital Sofia

First Care for the Baby

Routine medical services for newborn children includes providing

  • care for the skin, belly button, genitalia
  • providing daily neonatological medical examinations
  • breastfeeding advice and techniques
  • breast care tips and advice
  • tips to care for newborns.

The department offers laboratory tests including full blood analysis, blood gas analysis, blood group typing which are conducted at the request of the parents or when medically necessary for example if the newborn has difficulty adapting life outside of the womb, or shows any symptoms of disease.

Our department’s priority is to promote all natural nutrition for newborns, and therefore we follow the World Health Organization (WHO) breastfeeding promotion program and teach the WHO’s ten steps for successful breastfeeding.

One of the most important tasks of our team is to assist and support mothers to breastfeed their children.Newborns sucking reflex stimulates the mothers milk production, and mothers must be encouraged to breast feed because breast milk is the best nutrition for newborns, rich in proteins, fats and carbohydrates, as well as providing protective antibacterial, antiviral and other immunology factors.

Nurses and midwives are constantly among the mothers to help them breastfeed the newborns, and provide tips on how to place the child on the breast. The midwives also provide advice how to care for the breasts, and encourage proper breastfeeding hygiene.

If the mother is unable to produce milk, the neonatologists will seek solutions to the problem by conducting lactation tests to determine whether there is sufficient milk. If the mother has a physiological problem producing milk, the mother will be provided with professional help to overcome the issue.

Within the in-patient department, the facilities have been designed for mothers comfort and needs, because they may be taking their first steps caring for their baby’s hygiene and learning breast-feeding techniques. Therefore, we designed two separate facilities: the breast feeding room and the baby bathing room to assist the mothers in this learning process.
