5-cm stomach tumor was removed laparoscopically by surgeons in Tokuda

17 august 2016

The duration of the operation is not different from that of open surgery, says one of the leading surgeons of Tokuda Hospital Dr. Veselin Marinov

The team of the Minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery of Tokuda Hospital Sofia performed laparoscopic gastric resection. This kind of operations of the stomach tumors are still rare here. The patient's rehabilitation started on the day of surgery and he recovers quite quickly. For comparison, in the case of open surgery rehabilitation begins at least three days after the intervention.

"This method of surgery is specific and challenging, but the techniques of surgery with minimal blood loss in cancer of the digestive system will more often be prefered as first-choice treatment," says Dr. Veselin Marinov, who heads the Department of Minimally Invasive and Laparoscopic surgery.

Through four small incisions the surgeons removed five centimeters tumor of the stomach and the gallbladder affected by gallstone disease. 72-year-old patient was admitted to the ward with complaints of weight loss, fatigue and malaise. Doctors in Tokuda conducted all the necessary imaging and endoscopic examinations, and diagnosed cholelithiasis and formation of the stomach. After the possible methods of treatment were discussed, the team focused on the minimally invasive and laparoscopic techniques taking into account the age and concomitant diseases of the patient.

The advanced operation lasted two hours. "Until recently it was thought that the laparoscopic method lasts longer and prolongs the time under anesthesia for the patient," says Dr. Marinov, but he clarifies that the duration of the bloodless and conventional interventions is already equal. "At the same time, the benefits to the patient are numerous and well known. So the laparoscopic surgery will increasingly enter as the preferred method for radical treatment of oncological diseases in the abdomen," predicts the leading surgeon.
