The girl is feeling well, and is recovering quickly

A 2-month-old baby with a rare oncologic kidney disease has been treated and has undergone surgery at Tokuda Hospital. Dr. K. Davidov’s (Head of the Urology Dept.) team performed the surgery on removing a nephroblast, covering two thirds of the kidney together with the organ itself. The surgical intervention was undertaken after oncologists confirmed the benefit of the surgery to the chemotherapy, taking into consideration the young age of the patient as well as her weight of 5 kg. If delaying the treatment, this types of tumors grow quickly and cover the surrounding tissue, including engaging the other kidney and metastasize in the lungs. Early intervention, on the other hand, gives higher chances of full recovery and a relatively high quality of life

The baby girl was forwarded for her treatment from a Varna hospital. Her complaints started as of the 5th day after birth – blood in the urine, and anemia – requiring blood transfusion. After reading her diagnostic imaging reports – ultrasound and scanner (showing the malignant formation covering a large part of the left kidney), and consulting oncochematologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians and neonatologists, the skilled and experienced Urology Dept. team proceeded to the only lasting and beneficial for the patient solution – removal of the tumor and the kidney. The surgery went on smoothly with no complications, and the young patient is recovering.

“This is a rather rare case – such type of congenital tumor occur only in 6 in 1 million children. Prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment are essential to the outcome of the diseases – the tumor was removed before engaging adjacent tissue and organs”, stated Dr. Davidov.
