1m length bypass saved the life of a 77-year old man in Tokuda

11 april 2013

A bypass with near 1 m length was executed by the vascular surgeons of Tokuda Hospital Sofia. It was done on the femoral (thigh) artery of a patient, in danger of amputation of the whole right leg. The 3h surgery operation has recovered the blood supply in the limb through remote natural bypass using the vein vessels.

The 77-year old patient from Ruse has attended the Japanese hospital in emergency, because of a dangerous blockage of the thigh artery, a result of atherosclerosis (plaques build-ups inside the vessels).
“Because of the significant damage along the whole affected limb, the oxygen was insufficient. In such cases, if the surgery treatment is late or postponed in the time, the impassable parts of the artery become more and more, the tissue of the leg dies gradually and irreversibly and then the patient may lose his limb”, alarmed Doc. Chervenkov, Chief of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Angiology of Tokuda Hospital Sofia.

Before the operation it was specified using imaging examinations that the whole artery is impassable and through precise specification doctors found a tiny but undamaged zone of the main vessel almost on the foot. This made necessary the building of a bypass along the whole length of the leg to detour the whole blocked vessel and practically to build a totally new vessel.  As a result the blood circulation of the old man was recovered. “In this moment his leg is normally and sufficiently supplied with blood and the amputation is avoided.”, Doc. Chervenkov announced.

The Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Angiology of Tokuda Hospital Sofia is one of the centers in Bulgaria in which all kinds of planned and emergent vascular conditions are treated. The Clinic has also a specialized program for prevention of amputations, in the framework of which when the diagnostic is timely performed and specialized treatment is applied, the total blockages of the vessels can be corrected on time before the damages become irreversible. Over 6000 surgery operations have been made since the opening of the Clinic. The hospital registers also a tendency for constant increase of the minimally invasive arterial surgery share. 1500 minimally invasive procedures have been made so far in the Clinic.
