29 october 2014

The first of its kind operation in Bulgaria kept thoroughly the integrity of the child's neuro fibers

For the first time in the country the thoracic surgeоns of Tokuda removed neurinoma under the collarbone of a 3-year-old kid completely bloodlessly. The thoracic surgery team of Tokuda Hospital eradicated 5 cm tumor after complicated minimally invasive operation. This is the first time when such a formation is removed completely bloodlessly without affecting the nerve tissues in any way. The access to the tumor is extraordinary complicated as it is situated under the collarbone in a rich vascularised zone in the thorax. The surgeons' challenge to reach the tumor, to cut it out and to remove the formation out of 5 cm hole, concluded succesfully for the child. His nerve tissues were completely intact and this prevented problems with the peripheral nervous system.

Neurinoma is a benign tumor, formed from cells from nerve fibers, which begin to divide very fast and only for a year their size can reach 5 cm", said Dr. Tzvetan Minchev, head of Thoracic Surgery Department in Tokuda and added that in most of the cases the genesis of this formations remains unclear.

"The removing of a neurinoma, situated on the pair sympathetic trunk (truncus sympathicus) requires special precision and it is very important his integrity to remain intact, in order to prevent damage of the peripheral nervous system", underlined dr. Minchev. He is certain that if the neurinoma was not removed, he would continue growing and will slow down the growth of the child. The thoracic surgeon take the decision for video-assisted surgery, in which through two small 5 mm holes are introduced surgical instruments with a camera. The 5 cm formation was removed and taken out through the same mini holes.

"We are very happy that the results of the tumor examination show that this is benign tumor", Dr. Minchev was pleased to say. The child recovered fully yet the day after the surgery, and three days later he was discharged from the hospital. In the moment he is well and visits Tokuda Hospital just for the control examinations once in a three months.
